After reading many of the reviews, I saw that the pros outweighed the cons. My wife got me this for Father's day. I have to say, this is a pretty good hawk. It was super sharp out of the box (I have the cut to prove it, and yes I was a dummy for cutting myself). The weight was good and felt good in my hand. I haven't had to throw a tomahawk in years, and have no need to, but I tried it anyway. I still had it and it was on target. I tried cutting a 2 inch thick piece of pine and made short order of it withing 2 minutes (yes I timed myself like a geek). Now if I were still in the Army, I would probably drop the money for some of the more expensive hawks. I won't say that this is a perfect product. For what most people are going to use it for, I think it is awesome! Let's be honest, how many of us are going to throw one of these in our daily lives? If you compete in throwing competitions, I am pretty sure you are going to invest in a little higher end. For the camper or just putting together a bug out bag, this is the perfect tool.

Nice tomahawk

I like this tomahawk. Its very useful, I used the pointed tip to break up some ice this winter. Very sharp, feels very nice in the hand. Great tool all around.

Decent "Hawk" for the money.

In Vietnam, American Special Forces soldiers soon learned a lesson their ancestors knew very well--a tomahawk is better than a knife for close combat. In spite of its popularity, my own opinion of the Vietnam tomahawk has always been that it's a wimpy little ax, with a head that's too small for real work and a handle that will snap like a twig. It's a crude blunt instrument that looks like an ax. The SOG Fusion Tactical Tomahawk takes the concept behind the Vietnam Special Forces ax and gets rid of the many problems. 

Weight is a major concern whether you are a hunter or a soldier, and you need a lot of positives to carry a 24 oz axe as a regular part of your kit. The SOG Fusion justifies every ounce. The steel ax head, with the traditional military spike for balance, has a 2 3/4" straight edge that's properly ground so you can efficiently chop wood or heavy bone. Hunters of big game often find a small ax to be more efficient at butchering tasks than a heavy knife, something nearly everyone knew in the frontier days. 

The weakest point of the old Vietnam axe was the wooden handle, too thin at the juncture with the axe head to be reliable. The Fusion has a much less destructible fiberglass handle with rubberized grip. Once marketed as "unbreakable," fiberglass proved to be much less than perfect as a tool handle. The tang and rivet attachment of head to handle that you see in the Fusion is an excellent solution to the old issue of head separation, a puzzle that smiths have battled for centuries. Used with some skill, this combination really should last forever. In camp you'll find it's endlessly practical.

Saved my life!

This tomahawk saved my life. On the day this arrived I also received my orders. I dressed up in full ODBs and set out to do my yard work just as the wife had ordered. Rummaging in the shed, I stepped on a garden rake. Of course it flicked up and wacked me in the head, knocking me out like a Tom & Jerry cartoon. As I fell, I tried to grab hold of the work bench, but that tipped to, falling on top of and trapping my legs. I don't know how long after but I awoke, but found myself unable to lift the heavy table from my legs. I could scream for help, but that would be in vain as my wife was away for the weekend at militia training (I stayed home to guard the compound, always ready to use the claymore remote against strangers). I was lucky though. I had strapped the SOG Tomahawk to my right leg (you never know when you're going to encounter a Bengal tiger, a ninja assassin, or those anti democracy socialist pigs that call themselves the FBI and ATF). I laid there several hours. Fortunately from the work bench, the latest issue of Soldier of Fortune had also fallen, but was out of reach from my bare hands that I would use to squeeze the life out of those liberals who step on the Bill of Rights. I used the spiked end of the Tomahawk to grab the SoF magazine. I kept myself entertained for hours, imagining myself like Arnold in Commando. After reading all the stories that read like a penthouse forum I became bored and wanted out. I could do one of two things and starving to death was not an option. I had to adapt and overcome I could chop my legs off. Or I could hack away at the wooden bench legs. It was me or the bench. Only one of us would survive. I took out my trusty tomahawk and engaged in one on one hand to hand combat with that barbarian bench. Oh it put up a good fight and there was much yelling. But after an hour or so, I had won out. The bench lay there with its guts of wooden shavings laying in a pile. The smell of rotting wooden flesh lay heavy in the air. Sometimes I still have nightmares about. But I just did what I had to do to survive. 
Years later, that tool also help me in the muddy trenches where I battled inground sprinkler hoses.

Perfect For Backpacking

I used to carry a machete for clearing trails and cutting firewood along with a folding shovel. Now I just carry this tomahawk. I discovered this tool when a friend of mine bought one first. I've used my a fair amount; he's used his extensively. I use it to cut firewood, dig holes, driving tent stakes, pulling tent stakes (see the holes in the blade? perfect!), and for entertainment. When all your chores are done, it's fun to throw this well balanced axe. After many poor throws, this tomahawk has show it's durability. I've also used the axe to pry wood apart and am surprised the handle holds up as well as it has. For the price, the quality of the tool is simply amazing. It's also extremely light. I highly recommend.

This is a Tough Tomahawk!!!

I bought 2 of these tomahawks by SOG and I have put one of them through "hell" and it has performed like a champion! I had another tomahawk from a well known company who I will not mention here, but suffice it to say, the handle on that tomahawk broke after much less use than the SOG tomahawk! I have used the SOG "Tactical Tomahawk" to cut wood, dig, break cement, cut wire off a fence post as well as some other things which would possibly be considered "abusive" but it didn't break, chip or bend! I was hacking on a piece of wood on a sawhorse and I hit the handle hard, several times, just below the head on the edge of the sawhorse and that didn't break it and I guarantee a wooden handle would have broken! I used the side of the tomahawk to pound some nails because I was out a ways from the house cleaning up some fallen branches and noticed a spot in my fence which needed a quick repair and I did not have a hammer handy so I used the tomahawk and it worked fine! I have thrown this tomahawk quite a few times into a tree trunk and also missed, but the tomahawk hasn't broken or chipped! SOG is a brand which I expect will be good quality and this tomahawk does not disappoint!

Brutal

This is the close combat hawk you are looking for. It isn't made for chopping wood, it's for chopping people. Like it or not, that's the way it is. It's durable and very sharp. It has a good weight to it. Don't worry about the drilled holes in the hawk, they don't affect the durability at all. Haven't put it to the test of true combat, hope I do. The only thing that should change is a sheath that can attach to molle gear. SOG should look at the SPAX for inspiration.
